The July/August 2008 issue of Sierra Magazine has an article on me and the project and has a nice picture too!
Thank you for visiting and take some time to look around and learn about the project. Your ideas are welcome. It is still developing and I'm doing a lot of experimenting on learning how to make the positive fun and enjoyable.
And thank you to Erin Pursell and Michael Darter for the article and photo!

Came over from Sierra Club Magazine and was pleasantly surprised to see your posting welcoming me!! Great photo... but I was hoping to catch a glimpse of your temp tatoo... would you post one up sometime?
I also wanted to applaud your efforts, especially by also promoting bicycling as a transportation alternative. Keep up the great work!

I saw your story at Sierra Club and I was looking over your blog. It's good to hear someone promoting the sensible answers. There is a lot to be done yet there is so much 'low hanging' fruit to go after. So little effort would go a long way, yet it remains undone. I was on the phone with my dad in the Midwest the other day. He was telling me that global warming doesn't exist! To back it up he said that last winter was the coldest on record. I tried to remind him that while there is hard evidence that the world is indeed warming, the real issue is climate change, which in temperate areas, such as where he lives you are likely to see more extreme seasons, like a record cold winter.
Then he pulls out that there was climate change before man existed on earth (thank goodness at least I don't have to convince him the earth is more then 6000 years old :). I said yes, that is indeed true, but imagine you lived under a rock ledge. You know at some time in the future that ledge will collapse. Does it make sense to chip away at it because it fall down some day anyway?
I don't know if I gotten through to him, I hope at least he might question some of the corporate propaganda that gets shoved at much of America every day.
Keep up the good fight, it can be tough at times but it is paying off. Maybe many of the older generations don't get it but the kids do.

A very worthwhile mission, and some promising steps. I really like your tattoo concept. For high visibility situations you might even try a garter of some kind, in a distinctive color.
Keep at it. These things take time. The Sierra Club piece will be the first of many.

I'd also be interested in seeing a pic of the temporary tattoo. This sounds like a cool project.

Colleen,
This is a wonderful, worthwhile thing that you are doing. I think that elementary and middle schoolers would love to hear your story. I wish you great success in getting your message across.

Colleen,
Great idea! Anything that excites our children and "gets green" at the same time is a win all around. Like the other posters here, I too am wondering what the temporary tattoo you designed looks like. I also wonder if you could sell it on items like coffee mugs and tee-shirts via something like CafePress.com. Folks who want to help out could buy them, thereby supportng your "Green Team" and your further work in energy-efficient initiatives.

Hi Colleen,
Say you article in Sierra Magazine and think you are doing a wonderful thing.
Another idea that people might be able to help with is checking tire pressure in their car. Cars (and trucks) with properly inflated tires achieve better fuel economy and are safer to operate as well.

Very nice article -- I really enjoyed seeing someone trying to use people's love of sports as a positive force!

Colleen,
What a great project. Just to give you a little bit of hard data on how a little effort can make a big difference -- in May, we started to sleep the computers and turning off the monitors when they're not in use, and I also replaced the most used lights with fluorescents (dinning room, kitchen, and my studio). Compared with 1 year ago May, our electricity usage was down 20%. In June, I did a lot of web site work so the computers were on more, but we were still down 15% in June compared with June last year.
Also, if you haven't read Cradle to Cradle, you should. They too believe that it's possible to be good to the planet without making sacrifices; they have a lot of interesting ideas.
